What are metal braces?
Metal braces are one of the most common orthodontic treatment options available to help you achieve a straighter, healthier, and more beautiful smile. Metal braces can also be used in conjunction with other orthodontic treatments to correct bad or misaligned bites. If you are unhappy with the way your smile looks due to overcrowded or gapped teeth, or a bad bite, Dr. Skanchy can determine whether you are a good candidate for metal braces. If this treatment is a good option for you, our orthodontist will create a treatment plan that is specific to your needs and smile goals.
Why would I want them?
Not only are braces designed to straighten your teeth but they also help you have a healthier smile. Straighter teeth make it easier to keep your teeth clean and healthy, ultimately helping you avoid things such as tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, metal braces have been used for decades to correct jaw and tooth alignments. They are highly effective and can produce amazing results that can last a lifetime with proper post-treatment care.
How do metal braces work?
Braces consist of a system of metal wire, brackets, and bands. The brackets are attached to the front of your teeth with a strong adhesive, and they are connected to each other with the metal and bands. Throughout your treatment, Dr. Skanchy will adjust the wire to help guide your teeth into their ideal position. Once your treatment is complete, we will take an impression of your new smile and create a customized retainer. Our orthodontist will specify when and for how long you need to wear your retainer after your treatment to ensure that your teeth remain in their new position. Patients will need to wear a retainer for the rest of their lives, at least at night, to prevent their teeth from shifting out of place.
